Shortly after the outbreak of World War II, Dr. Wallis of Vickers proposed bombing the dams supplying electricity to Germany's largest industrial region, the Ruhr.
The idea was to load approximately 3 tons of explosives into a drum-shaped bomb, give it a counter-rotating motion, and send it hurtling across the water, hitting the dam's parapet, sinking, and detonating at a depth of 9 meters, destroying the dam.
The Lancaster B Mk.III, which carried this bomb, had its underside redesigned with a large hollow in the fuselage to accommodate the special Upkeep bomb.
At midnight on the full moon of May 13, 1943, 19 modified Lancaster B Mk.IIIs from 617 Squadron successfully destroyed two large German dams. Following the operation, 617 Squadron, along with its commander, Lieutenant Colonel Gibson, became known as the Dam Busters.
