Hedgehog S Collecta 88458

The hedgehog is the largest insectivorous mammal, belonging to the Echinacea family. The back and sides of its body are covered with spines up to 3 cm long. When threatened, the hedgehog curls up into a ball and uses the spines to frighten the environment.

This is how it defends itself. It is found in Europe and Asia in temperate climates. It inhabits the edges of forests, parks, and gardens. It digs burrows and also uses rabbit burrows as hiding places, as well as various cavities and crevices, where it builds a nest of moss, grass, and leaves.

Its diet includes insects, earthworms, snails, small vertebrates, as well as carrion and plant material. It hibernates.
