Rubber is primarily grown on monoculture farms. This leads to unfair working conditions (e.g., child labor, low wages, poor conditions), exploitation of smallholder farmers, loss of biodiversity, deforestation of rainforests, and long-term environmental damage from excessive pesticide use. Recycled rubber latex is different. We work with farmers who grow rubber trees in agroforestry systems, meaning we plant other beneficial plants in addition to rubber trees. This contributes to biodiversity and increases CO2 binding capacity.
